A Research Synthesis of Interventions Focused on Joint Attention for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

|
The purpose of this study was to examine contents and methods of interventions focused on Joint attention for children with autism spectrum disorders. For the purpose, a total of 22 research studies published between 2001 and 2011 in korea and in abroad were analyzed in terms of a) common characters of studies, b) specific characteristics of intervention elements. The results of the present study were as follows. The participants of the selected studies were mainly preschool age children with autistic disorders and experimental strategies were primarily naturalistic behavioral approaches(17 studies). Of the 22 articles, the half of the studies(11 studies) applied direct response-reinforcement relationship as consequences of joint attention behavior and 10 studies involved intervention program for parents of children with autism spectrum disorders. 64% of reviewed studies used intervention of utilizing the motivational techniques of Pivotal Response Training in conjunction with interest and preference stimuli for children with autism spectrum disorders. Based on the results, the implication were discussed and future study issues were recommended.
